Stuck in a elevator after an earthquake

After entering on the 7th floor and pushing ground button the elevator descended until "BOOM" and shuddered to a stop! I thought hello this is great, stuck in an elevator in a earthquake zone. I looked for an escape hatch on the ceiling, nope and nothing on the floor. Next thought was how high had it stopped, the red digital display displayed a 5 so I thought ok a bit of a drop if the cable snaps, great! Gingerly pushed the ground button again, nothing. Pushed the "are you stuck in the elevator" button, where are you? replied a metallic voice, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't remember the name or address of the building I was in. I'm in Cathedral square I said, I then asked the voice, where are you? I'm in Sydney (Australia!) was the reply, no help in a hurry here I thought. I looked at the elevators certificate of fitness for an address or at least the name of the building, absolutely nothing. In desperation as I had left my cigarettes in the ute. I then remembered a TV program where the trapped so to speak had forced the elevator doors open. With both hands I managed to force those doors open, thankfully the elevator has stopped a couple of feet from the fifth floor so I didn't have far to jump. To my metallic mate I yelled see you later I'm outta here. The only other thought I had as I exited was if the elevator lets go now I will be chopped in half! Once out I looked back, both columns either side of the elevator had horizontal cracks through them. Finding my way out of that building (which turned out to be the old Government Life building) was another story. An experience I don't want to repeat any time soon!
